What is Codeigniter?

Codeigniter is a PHP MVC Framework . Now let’s understand PHP MVC Framework by letter.

So basically it is a framework means Codeigniter contains libraries with pre-packaged functions following the MVC pattern (Model - View - Controller).

We will briefly discuss MVC pattern in a later blog. Here take a look at some brief history of codeigniter and its versions :



History :

The first public version of CodeIgniter was released by EllisLab on February 28, 2006.

Codeigniter 4 was released On February 24, 2020, birthday of Jim Parry who was the project lead of Codeigniter 4 and died on January 15, 2020.

After that, the project continues until today with other project lead.



Versions :

CodeIgniter 3.1.11 is the current version of the framework, intended for use with PHP 5.6+.

CodeIgniter 4 is the upcoming version of the framework, intended for use with PHP 7.2.Development is underway, and the current version is v4.1.2.

It is always recommended to go with stable versions. Hence we will go further with Codeigniter 3.



Codeigniter VS Laravel :

It is often asked that what is a better option Codeigniter OR Laravel?

So the answer is both fits best in their own situation. Of course Laravel is better and more secure option as it comes with more features and functionalities.

But if you have a small team or you are making a project with small scope then codeigniter is a best way to go with.


And also codeigniter is a best option if want to learn any php framework then codeigniter is a best framework to start with.
